Year 6: Mrs Andrews 2018 - 2019

Mrs Andrews

Welcome to Year 6. Our teacher is Mrs Andrews and our Learning Assistant is Mrs Brokenshaw. We are really looking forward to the year ahead and the challenges that it will bring. Autumn Term will be jam packed with learning- here are some of the highlights!

History: In history we will begin to learn about the Anglo Saxons and the Vikings. There will be a strong focus on chronology and being able to use a range of historical sources to study the past. We will evaluate the usefulness of sources using the acronym 'PARRB'- asking ourselves what the Purpose is, whether it is Authentic, is it Reliable, Relevant and is there any Bias. These skills will help us in our study of history at high school too.

Geography: In geography, Mrs Brougham will teach us about South America. We will focus firstly on key geographical skills and knowledge such as our use of maps and atlases and our understanding of geographical language and terminology associated with place. Following this, we will use these skills to discover more about the physical and human features of the continent of South America with a more in depth study of Brazil.

Maths: In maths, we will cover Place Value, the Four Operations and Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. Mrs Brougham will cover Shape. As well as developing our fluency in maths, we will work hard at improving our reasoning and problem solving skills. We will learn resilience and how to persevere with a task even when we find it hard. Exploration of mathematical concepts is key and there will be a strong emphasis on mathematical language and vocabulary.

CLIC and Maths Meetings: These sessions will continue to help us with our maths fluency and really embedding our knowledge and application of timetables. Maths meetings help us to review all areas of maths regularly and CLIC focuses on the basic skills we need to work with number every day.

English:  In English, we will read 'The Landlady' by Roald Dahl and write our own mystery stories based around this. Next we will read extracts from 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'. In response, we will write persuasive letters and a balanced argument about whether Harry and Ron should have stolen Mr Weasley's car to get to Hogwarts. During our Art and DT skills week, we will write a setting description based on the painting 'The Metamorphosis of Narcissus' by Salvador Dali. We will read the picture book 'The Dish and the Spoon' by Mini Grey before writing a newspaper report and a recount of their adventures!

RE: In RE we will further our knowledge about world religions by discussing Buddhism and Judaism and comparing them with Christianity. We will consider the pros and cons of different religions and the links between them.

PSHE and Global Learning: In PSHE we will learn about democracy and how central and local governments are run. Later in the term, in Global Learning, we will look at charity and social justice- comparing the two concepts and considering what we can do to be effective global citizens.

PE: In PE, some of us will continue learning to swim but we will all take part in dance with Mrs Cook.

Music: Miss Brennan will work with us on exploring rhythm and rhyme with links to Brazil!
