KS1: Miss Patino 2021 - 2022

Miss Patino

Y2 teacher KS1 manager

Hello and welcome to our class page.

I am Miss Patino, I teach one of our KS1 classes, and I am lucky enough to look after all the children in KS1. In our classroom, we also have Miss Croft, who is a fabulous member of our support staff.

During this half term, in Maths we will be focussing on our place value skills, counting in 2s, 5s, 10s forwards and backwards within 100 and our addition and subtraction facts!

We will be exploring many different texts in our English sessions including ‘Owl Babies’ and ‘The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark’ and some non-fiction books all about owls.

In History, we will be looking at Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. We will be exploring our British History, retelling stories and understanding why we celebrate particular events.

In Geography, we will be learning about the seven continents and five oceans of the world. We will also be exploring cities in the UK and the surrounding seas to the UK.

In Science, we will be exploring the topic of animals including humans. We will learn about senses and the human body. As well as classifying animals including their diet.

During our Music sessions, we will be practising explore beat, rhythm and tempo focussing on the South African style of music. In Computing we will be looking at algorithms and following instructions.

In RE we will be exploring Christianity and God and how the world is a special place and in PSHE, we will be exploring how we belong to a community and how to respect ourselves and others.

During this half term, we will have a DT week, learning about vehicles and creating our own moving vehicles. We will also have an Art week, we will be studying Barbara Hepworth and her wonderful creations.

We are also lucky enough to be having some PE sessions with Saints on Wednesday and Tops PE on a Friday. Please ensure your child has their full kit in school. Kits will then be sent home at the end of half term to be washed.

In KS1 we have three different books that are sent home.

Banded reading books – these are changed every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Don’t worry about reading a full book each day, reading a couple of pages each day will be great. Please just make a note of which page you have read up to.

RWI books – these are sent home on Monday and returned on Friday. These are phonetically plausible books that are chosen specific in line with your child’s phonic knowledge.

Reading for pleasure books – these are sent home on Monday and returned on Friday. These are books that are to be shared as a family, at bed time, before tea or just snuggled up on the sofa.

In addition to reading daily, we have Rainbow Challenges for KS1. These are challenges set for each half term. The first RED Rainbow Challenge has six different activities for you to complete before October half term. Please take pictures of you completing each activity and add it onto School Spider (Rainbow Challenges Red Autumn 1). If you have completed most of these challenges before October half term, you will earn your Red Rainbow Certificate.

If you ever have any concerns or want to discuss something, please make a note in your child’s planner that you would like to speak to me or email the school office and I will get back to you ASAP. Please remember to read with your child as often as possible. School planners are checked daily for any messages.

I’m really looking forward to another interesting year with another wonderful group of Longton Lane children.
